So You’re Not Going to the Indy 500?

You live in Indy, but you’ve decided against going to the race. Don’t sit at home feeling like you’ve missed out a weekend of drinking, parties, and farmers tans. Go out and get your own at a different Indy event! Here’s your top four best bets that aren’t the race. (And if you are going to the race, check out our survival tips.)

1. Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra and Indianapolis Opera Present: Crescendo!
What’s better than an outdoor concert? How about a FREE outdoor concert at White River State Park to kick off summer? For the first time ever, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra and the Indianapolis Opera are presenting a family-friendly concert on the Lawn at White River. Enjoy orchestra classics, Broadway hits, opera talent, and pop ballads. Something for everyone, no matter your age or genre preference! (Friday, May 22, 7:30 p.m.)

2. Indy 500 Festival Parade
Okay, so you’re not going to the race. But the fact is you live in Indy, and you can still support one of the biggest events our city puts on. Head out Saturday from 12-1:30 p.m. to watch the Indy 500 Festival parade. It’s free, it’s a fun atmosphere, and maybe you’ll spot some Indy celebs. (Saturday, May 23 12-1:30 p.m.)

If you’re not heading to the race, but are still craving wheels spinning around a track in a circle, head to the Coliseum and watch some of the most badass ladies of Indy whip around at the roller derby. It goes without saying that Star Wars night means that costumes are 100% encouraged. The Naptown Roller Girls never disappoint, and if you need yet one more reason to show up, the ladies are at risk of losing their practice space. So show up, cheer loud, and may the force be with you. (Saturday, May 23, doors open @ 6 p.m., first bout @ 7 p.m.)

4. Indiana City Brewing 2-Year Anniversary Celebration
In two short years, Indiana City Brewing has helped revitalize the neighborhood around Angie’s List and has brought delicious beer to the Eastside of downtown Indy. Thank them for their contributions to the city (especially you, Angie’s List neighbors) and grab a pint. The celebration includes more than a dozen previously unreleased beers, music from Action Jackson (my favorite DJ in Indy), and food trucks. (Saturday, May 23 2-10 p.m.)
